Translational OCT

Biophotonics

Translating novel and cutting-edge OCT technology from bench to bedside

Clinical OCT applications

Using its unique imaging properties, OCT based technologies can provide insight into the physiology and pathophysiology for improved diagnostic imaging, treatment monitoring and surgical visualization. The close cooperation with clinical departments at the General Hospital and external partners enables a smooth translation of OCT in ophthalmology, dermatology, urology, neurology and other medical fields.

Preclinical OCT application

Optical imaging can help answering fundamental questions in basic research with tailored prototypes in disease models. Due to its non-invasive nature, OCT is particularly suited for longitudinal studies investigating acute and chronic disease models in vivo. Also tissue samples can be rapidly evaluated by OCT providing three-dimensional data with cellular resolution. Combination with other modalities, e.g. photoacoustics, adds valuable functional information (see multimodal biomedical imaging).

Industrial OCT

Although still in its infancy, OCT can be employed for non-destructive testing and quality control during manufacturing processes. Its high resolution, sensitivity and imaging speed provides access to structural and dynamic material properties.
